Connecting with Wildness

Particularly during this time of semi-isolation, or for those living in towns and cities it can be easy to lose track of our connection with nature and being part of and belonging to this beautiful interconnected wildness.

Remembering we are made of the same stuff as stars and the earth, as other earthly beings; that we inhale what trees exhale and they inhale what we exhale; that we live on an ancient and ever changing planet; can help us feel a greater sense of groundedness.

Take some time to think of the wild places where you felt the greatest sense of grounding and peace in your life. Think of a wild place to your North, South, East and West. Allow the memory of being there to fill your imagination. What you would see, smell, hear, feel and taste if you were there. You might like you draw them or collate pictures. When you feel uneasy standing to face and connect with those compass points can bring calm and joy and a deep connection with the feeling of being wild and of belonging to this wild world.

They don’t need to be places you’ve actually been to, they could be places you’ve seen pictures of or videos of and seeing those images brought a feeling of comfort. They don’t need to be far-flung and may move as you move.

You might like to get a compass so that you really can face towards those wild places.
