Sylva Sisters: Wild Dyeing, Printing & Wellbeing

10.30am - 4.30pm at National Trust Footprint in Windermere, Cumbria

A day of exploring colour and printing using plants and flowers in beautiful woodlands. The day also includes yoga, mindfulness and forest bathing, to offer opportunities for nurturing as well as a learning. We have the whole woodland and Footprint building all to ourselves to explore and retreat in.

We shall cover:

- Identify, foraging and preparation of plants and flowers to use in dyeing and printing

- Preparation of fabrics (in the one day workshop much of this will be a description rather than practical as some of this will be pre-prepared)

- Exploring the effect of mordants

- Hapa Zome printing

- Hand sewing* the dyed fabric into something useful to take home

- Campfire baking

- Yoga, mindfulness and forest bathing

It's an absolutely fantastic day for all women, no matter your experience. You can join in with as much or as little of the activities as you feel like on the day.. it's Y O U R day.

Booking essential, see website. There are toilets and a beautiful indoor space with wood burning fire and woodland views to retreat to in very bad weather.

The day is led by Yoga and yogic mindfulness teacher and yoga therapist Nes Bear who is also a qualified and experienced forest school leader, woodland manager and craftswoman who shares her skills in a way that is fun, welcoming, calming and gentle.

There will be lots of snacks and teas available throughout the day, as well as the vegan cake that we'll bake on the fire. Please bring waterproofs, wear boots and bring some vegan food to share for lunch. It can be something simple like bread or hummus or your favourite dish!

* “When you learn to make things with your hands, you begin to awaken to the beauty and value of things in your life. Teaches us about slowness: the antidote to brevity and efficiency. It shows us, through the patience and skillfulness of our own hands, the what goes into a thing . . . We work in tandem with mystery, feeling its rhythms awaken in our bone-memory. . . As the hands work, the mind is stilled and a greater listening is engaged as we drop down into the deep rhythm of devotion, where the whole world is in communion. . .

Handwork also teaches us the patience required to make a life materialize. . . The work is small, the work is slow, and all we can do is stay with it. As Dr Clarissa Pinkola Estes says, “the shortcut, the easy way, always falls apart. Then one returns to the handmade life. One has to pick it up painfully, and piece it back together, holding the overall pattern in one's mind, but working patiently, piece by piece.”” Toko-Pa Turner
